GPS In Mexico

March 25, 2009 | 2 Comments

By Mark Walker:  Originally published May, 08, at The People’s Guide to Mexico , our main website:

You might ask: why do I need a GPS (Global Positioning System) receiver? Well, if you have to go into Guadalajara for a doctor’s appointment, it will make the trip less stressful and faster to have a device that speaks the names of the streets and instructs you in advance where to turn. Read more

Selling Property in Mexico/Yucatan

March 25, 2009 | Leave a Comment

I’ve lived in Valladolid, Yucatan for much of the last year. Retired and renting – tourist visa, so far. I have found a small house here possibly to buy. My question is: If I do buy it, can I sell it to a American in the States? I want to live in it, but I’m worried that if something happens with my health Read more

Dave Hensleigh, authenticcoppercanyon.com

The train changed schedule in Copper Canyon about 12 days ago. Primero stayed the same but segundo changed:
> -It goes Chi to Mochis on Thurs
> -Mochis to Chi Fri
> -Chi to Mochis Sat
> -Mochis to Chi Sun
> -Chi to Mochis Mon
> -Mochis to Chi Tues
> -WED NO SEGUNDO!
Then I was on the phone Saturday to my friend Erasmo in El Fuerte and he said the segundo is going to be stopped for awhile. I will get the lowdown when I am there the next few days.

Some Thoughts on Living Immersed in Mexican Culture

March 17, 2009 | 2 Comments

by Steve Crofter

More Than Tourists

There are many reasons norteamericanos move to Mexico. A few of the reasons, such as a favorable climate or a lower cost of living, have little to do with the love of Mexican culture. But I believe that most Canadians and USers who choose to live in Mexico, do so because they want to be at least somewhat involved with Mexicans and their culture. For many of us there is a definite appeal in experiencing Mexico relatively unadulterated by our own culture’s influence. The trick is to figure out the right balance between clinging to one’s native culture or abandoning it. Read more

hey guys i just read that article on basaseachic water fall. where is it exactly? any information would be appreciated. Lake Chapala Real Estate you can get back to me there …. thank you very much.

Carl replies:  Since this is your first post here I’m going to try to avoid being cranky but…. as I said in my post about using the forums, that is the place to post your questions — and that is the place where you can expect me to “get back to you”.  Sorry, but I just don’t have the time or energy to track you down at another website.  The reason this blog and forums exist, in fact, is so that I can easily respond to questions here, on my own website.

OK, so I did get cranky after all.  :)   But, please take the time to read about using the forum, post your questions there and last but not least, please do sign your post with a name, even if it isn’t your real one.

saludos!  Carl

Mexican Peso Declines

March 10, 2009 | Leave a Comment

Good news for Mexico-bound travelers, bad news for most Mexican citizens and investors:

The peso, the worst performer among the world’s most-traded currencies in the past six months, will weaken another 15 percent by year-end as the nation’s twin deficits swell, said Rogelio Ramírez de la O, the economist who predicted the 1994 devaluation.

The peso will slide to 18.2 per dollar

Mexico Property Ownership Change?

The News (Mexico)

A new proposal in the Senate would lift rules that prohibit foreigners from buying property in the nation’s coastal and border regions.

The bill, sponsored by Sen. Mario López Valdez of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, aims to boost foreign investment by scrapping constitutional prohibitions against non-Mexicans owning property within 50 kilometers of a coastline and 100 kilometers of the border.

Horsing Around The Sierra Madre – 1974 Style

Horsing around the Sierra Madre-1974 Style: A journey on horseback across Mexico’s great divide…

by Gary R Ziegler

garyhorseride-1

“A horse trip across Mexico’s wild west- you gotta be crazy! What about Pancho Villa and all the bandits” said a citified friend? ” Remember what happened to Humphrey Bogart!”

The summer was 1974. I was running Bear Basin Ranch in Westcliffe, Colorado, a remuda of half locoed Appaloosa horses and a string of rangy long horn cows while occasionally guiding educational programs for Outward Bound in remote canyons of Mexico’s Sierra Madre. I was very much ready for a good winter adventure. Thinking about the Sierra… Read more

Mexico City: An Opinionated Guide

March 3, 2009 | Leave a Comment

I just stumbled across an unusually interesting blog by Jim Johnston, an artist and Mexico City resident. I’ll post more about this blog later but I suggest you take it a look at it — the links he cites to other good Mexico blogs are excellent resources and go well beyond the “ordinary”. Although the title of his blog suggests that it is about Mexico City, Jim’s content actually goes well beyond the city limits.

Highly recommended!

Child Custody Problem

March 2, 2009 | Leave a Comment

Hello,

I need to know what to do if the father of my child won’t sign another letter for her to come with me to Mexico. He signed and noterized one already so she could get a passport. He said he won’t sign another letter though. What should I do?

 Sincerely,  Erica

Carl replies:

Erica, to the best of my knowledge your best (and perhaps only) recourse is to get a court order that will allow you to take your daughter out of the country.  This is a fairly common problem and one that affects any parent who wants to travel outside the U.S. with a child.  You don’t mention where you live but I’d be surprised if a local judge wasn’t familiar with this type of situation.

I spent most of my adult life flying Mexico

March 2, 2009 | 1 Comment

Saludos amigos!

I have truly been blessed. I learned to hang glide 30 years ago and I have spent almost every winter since then flying Mexico. I have seen this country as few gringos- or human beings for that matter- have ever had the opportunity. I have seen Mexico like the halcones and the zopilotes. But unlike our feathered friends- I got to sample the beer too. And sample, and sample and sample… Well, you get the picture.–

Or do you?

I am compelled to try and describe my experiences in an effort to share them with the millions of Mexico fans who will never get to huck themselves off a cliff and disappear into the Mexican back country. It has been an exciting quarter century. The results can be found at my new web site www.TalesFromTheWildBlueYonder.com

I would post a few episodes here if that’s appropriate.

Currently I am camped and flying on the beach in Nayarit.

Carl chimes in:

John, it is great to see your post but you forgot to sign your name… And please, don’t deprive us of further episodes or excerpts from your books.  One of the purposes of this blog and our newly opened Talk About Mexico forums is to provide a friendly soapbox for other Mexico authors and bloggers.  There is so much “fluff” on the internet about Mexico that the really good stuff tends to get lost in the crowd.  Keep it coming!  Adelante!

Here’s a link to John Q Olson’s WildBlueYonder website.  John alsohas some very cool videos of flying along the beach in Nayarit, Mexico on YouTube.

I also encourage anyone interested in flying in Mexico to get a back-and-forth conversation going with John on the forum.  I’ll copy this post to the forums and hope that John is able to pry himself out of his hammock occasionally to contribute some more of his experiences.
